Bodensee-Airport Friedrichshafen and ALBATROSS Partner to Transform the Airport into a Future-Ready Energy, Mobility & Logistics Hub

Friedrichshafen, Germany, September 8th 2025, Bodensee-Airport Friedrichshafen, in partnership with ALBATROSS, is taking important steps towards a more sustainable and integrated future. Through a long-term collaboration, the airport is developing into a forward-looking Energy, Mobility & Logistics Hub, strengthening its role as a regional connector for innovation, clean energy, and smart infrastructure. This partnership underlines the airport’s commitment to enhancing its economic resilience while aligning with future mobility and energy needs.

“ALBATROSS and its partners is not just bringing new energy infrastructure, they are helping set the foundation for the future of both aerial and ground mobility at Bodensee-Airport Friedrichshafen. By approaching every aspect of the transformation holistically, from energy and logistics to smart infrastructure, this partnership allows us to unlock the full economic potential of the airport. It marks a turning point in our ability to serve the people of the region sustainably, efficiently and long term.”

— Detlef Schäfer-Carroll, Managing Director, Bodensee-Airport Friedrichshafen

“While we are actively integrating all modes of transport to develop the airport into a comprehensive Energy, Mobility & Logistics Hub, regional air mobility remains central to unlocking its true economic impact. Our recent flight from Mönchengladbach to Friedrichshafen demonstrated both the feasibility and the necessity of such connections, enabling us to visit two key partners within a single day. In the future, these kinds of legs may be conducted using fully electric and significantly quieter aircraft.”

— Marius Wedemeyer, Co-Founder & Managing Director

The partnership focuses on two key areas. First, energy: planning is well underway for the installation of ground-mounted photovoltaic systems and battery energy storage systems (BESS). The energy concept places a strong emphasis on environmental compatibility, with layouts designed to support biodiversity through wide row spacing and species-compatible configurations. In addition, the integration of electrolyzers is being considered as a long-term option.

Second, mobility and logistics: the airport is evaluating the infrastructure needed to support electric and hydrogen-powered aviation, aircraft charging, and potential logistics services involving autonomous drones and digital infrastructure. Charging infrastructure plays a central role in this concept. Airside, the airport is preparing for future solutions for electric aircraft and support vehicles. Landside, the planning includes charging points for private vehicles as well as duty vehicles and logistics fleets, addressing both public use and operational needs.

Project progress has been steady. Photovoltaic infrastructure planning is well advanced, and technical coordination has yielded a positive outlook for grid integration. Collaborative workshops have also been conducted to model future regional mobility and logistics demand, helping to shape the long-term infrastructure development roadmap. Environmental considerations continue to play a central role, with site planning tailored to minimize land impact and maintain ecological compatibility.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was already signed in January 2025, formalizing the partnership between Bodensee-Airport Friedrichshafen and ALBATROSS. The collaboration is being developed in close consultation with airport leadership and key regional stakeholders.

“Bodensee-Airport Friedrichshafen has a very strong industrial base with large companies, yet remains underserved in terms of regional connectivity. Our partnership is not only unlocking development potential for the airport, but also preparing the ground for a new generation of regional air mobility. This will strengthen the airport’s role as an economic driver and improve long-term productivity across the region.”

— Dr. Stefan Breunig, Co-Founder and Managing Director of ALBATROSS.

In the coming months, Bodensee-Airport Friedrichshafen and ALBATROSS will continue refining the integrated energy and infrastructure concept, deepening coordination with regional partners, and preparing the next phases of implementation. The partnership aims to position the airport as one of the leading examples of sustainable regional aviation, combining renewable energy, new mobility solutions, and long-term regional value creation.
