Our guest article has been published in airliners+ Magazine 07/2026. In it, we explain why the electrification of aviation does not start in the cockpit, but with energy infrastructure on the ground.
From 2030 onwards, battery electric aircraft are expected to gradually enter regional passenger and cargo operations. The real bottleneck, however, is not the aircraft itself. It is the lack of grid capacity, fast charging infrastructure, and a system wide approach to energy supply at regional airports.
We argue that regional airports must evolve into decentralized energy, mobility, and logistics hubs. By integrating photovoltaic systems, large scale storage, and intelligent load management, they can enable electric aviation, unlock new business models, and strengthen regional value creation. A coordinated airport network provides the foundation for planning reliability, standardization, and financing.
